The Heritage Singers of Jacksonville 2018 Spring Concert

From Artistic/Executive Director, Michael Dell: Let there be peace on earth . . . The peace that was meant to be can sometimes be hard to come by! I think of Wendell Berry’s poem, which states, I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief… I rest in the grace of the world, and am free. In fact, Jesus admonished us to consider the lilies. Indeed, we are often responsible for own inner storms, and need the music (both figuratively and literally) of others to help us find a sense of inner calm! What better way than choral singing, to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony! Of course, we also think of peace in a global sense. In an age of ever-increasing tensions, it is easy to lose hope in the possibility for peace at any level of society. In the midst of such violence and upheaval in our world, these words of Lao-Tzu, a 6th c. BC Chinese philosopher, have never rung more true than today: If there is to be peace in the world, there must be peace in the nations. If there is to be peace in the nations, there must be peace in the cities. If there is to be peace in the cities, there must be peace between neighbors. If there is to be peace between neighbors, there must be peace in the home. If there is to be peace in the home, there must be peace in the heart. Mahatma Gandhi, who led the Indian people to independence from British rule in 1947, is attributed as saying: Be the change you wish to see in the world. Actually, this is an oversimplified distillation of a longer quotation by Gandhi, and any such aphorism is likely to fall under the weight of a more complex and nuanced challenge, such as the attainment of world peace! Nevertheless, the point remains valid that global change generally starts small and moves outward. Consider the sheer emotionally-charged experience of joining voices in creating magical moments in choral singing – even this is an example of putting differences aside (that which otherwise might divide us) in order to become united with others toward a common good. Together, let us not only imagine a new world, but also consider our own individual role and responsibility in creating it. Our 2018 Spring Concert Season will feature popular songs and original choral compositions, across a wide spectrum of style, which will focus our hearts and minds upon the very peace which is within our grasp, and ours to share. . . . . . and let it begin with me!
